When the prospect arose for me to serve the Lord in Hong Kong at HOLF, I warily decided to take advantage of the opportunity, not really knowing what to expect at all. I had never really learned much about the Asian culture and I had never really worked with disabled persons before, but I figured I shouldn't let that stop me from coming.
During the first couple of weeks at HOLF, I felt completely out of my element, like I didn't belong. But I soon fell in love with the children I was working with and eventually I found a place for myself to fit in. The Lord has enabled me to see the beauty in his creation of these wonderful children where society at large seems to only see the hopelessness and handicaps.
While at HOLF, I was completely amazed by the selfless serving of the workers there. Groups and volunteers come and go, but the workers at HOLF are the ones that keep the place running on a daily basis in order to give the residents a true, loving, Christian home. Through working with these people, I learned more about the type of person I am and the type of person I want to be. I wasn't aware of how self-centered I can be until I worked side-by-side with people that daily give everything of themselves with little thanks in return. My time at HOLF has been a real learning experience in more ways than one and for that I will always be grateful. The people at HOLF have taken a special place in my memories and in my heart, and I will miss them all greatly.
